We all appreciate well-designed web sites where information we need is just one click away. Our new portal, also known as myLoneStar, is designed to do just that. But what exactly is a portal?
A portal provides the unique ability to deliver personalized content to various audiences, allowing users to see only the information that is pertinent and relevant to them. Examples of well-known, public portals are AOL, iGoogle, MSNBC and Yahoo! For Lone Star students, most of this information will be displayed in the Student Center pagelet, and they will be just one click away from important financial aid, payment, registration and course information.
One of the most important functions of the portal is that it provides single sign-on access to other important services such as Angel (LSC-Online) and e-mail. For faculty and staff, this will be a huge improvement over the current systems which require different usernames and passwords.
A cross-section of faculty, staff and administrators from all locations aptly named the “Portal Partners” is working on the design and functionality of the new portal. In addition advising on deliverables and measurements of success, the Portal Partners also review features and provide feedback to the team developing the portal.
The portal will be available to all students beginning July 6 with new features and self-service options added throughout the year as they are phased in.
For a period of time we will have to maintain the current portal, MyRecords, and iStar simultaneously but links will direct users to the appropriate system.
In September 2010, new students applying to Lone Star College for spring 2011 will do so through the iStar online application. In addition to being advised in the new system, these new students will have the added functionality of updating their contact information in myLoneStar.
Beginning in October, academic planning and advising of all students enrolled for spring 2011 will be done in myLoneStar. On November 8, students will be able to search, register and pay for classes through the new portal! Financial aid activities will be fully accessible in myLoneStar in late December.
The last self-services options to become available in portal will be those tied to human resources and they will launch in December. This has the greatest impact on employees, who will be able to update their contact information, view pay advices and much, much more.
And finally, when students, faculty and staff return in January 2011, all Lone Star modules will be completely implemented and, through single sign-on, accessible via myLoneStar.
Want to know more? Visit the portal at any time by going to https://my.lonestar.edu. Now is a good time to get familiar with the information that is there and provide feedback. We hope you will find the portal to be an easy to use and convenient place to connect to Lone Star services! Keep your eyes open for fun extras to be added to myLoneStar along the way!
